The Ngati-tu people were hungry and it was after a cold winter so the people went fishing in the Kaupokonui river.
They could not catch any fish and were very sad. The taniwha felt sorry for the people and gave them fish.
One day strangers came and the Ngati-tu people gave them the fish. The taniwha was angry and splashed his tail and threw the people to the rocks.
After that the Ngati-tu got no fish and felt sad. They said sorry to the taniwha and made a promise to keep the fish from the taniwha for themselves.
